6/17/2023 0 Comments Shadow of the colossus pc downIs he scared? Is he determined? Does he doubt himself? We don't get to know he's his own character and his thoughts are his and his alone. It also pushes further the impact of scale when he confronts huge colossi because you feel that he's that much more alone. And as Wander visibly deteriorates through the game, you don't think 'what's wrong with me?', you think 'what's wrong with him?'. Wander has his own thoughts and the player has his/her own and you 'share' the adventure, rather than having an avatar. Personally, I think it's a beautiful way of telling a story. The story is already well underway when we drop into it and we only understand what we observe. But Ueda did't set up the game so characters mumble to themselves alone to update the player or a narrator to provide exposition. There very much is a story with deep characters, motivations, character arcs and plot twists. I propose an objective discussion of both the good and bad of Shadow of the Colossus, so that we can ask if art as a game can truly function as a game.Įdit: I played the PS3 remaster, FYI. I do not understand why people like this game, let alone praise SotC as a classic must-play of the PS2 era. The narrative feels nonexistent because the burden of filling in the many blanks without context is placed on the player. There was very little reason for me to care about continuing to play, I finished it because I had already dumped time into it and figured I may as well finish out. It is not fun to continually fail at something. This leads to death after death after failure after failure, and sometimes leads to the player becoming totally lost. The problem is that they are not fun to work with or around, and thus become frustrating to use very quickly, as they are all impossible to avoid entirely. You are a tiny human taking on giant, ancient creatures. The game's mechanics make sense from a lore standpoint. I spent 16 hours of my life playing the game 8 of those felt like a slog through a swamp of mechanics-as-metaphor. It is a game, first and foremost, and Shadow of the Colossus fails to be what a game is: entertaining, at the very least. The atmosphere, art, and tone set are great fits for what it wants to do, but those are the only good points I see about it. I believe Shadow of the Colossus would have been far better off as a movie. I don't really get why people hold it in such high regard. I hold the most unpopular opinion of Shadow of the Colossus being an absolute disaster as a game.
